Every year I jot down classic quotes from each of our family members. Some funny, some terrible, some revealing, a few inside jokes.
Joyce - 3
"Thank you for how good I be." -Joyce in prayer.
"Just insiding them out!" -Joyce prepares her clothes before she gets dressed.
"Sage, it's Cinderalla on FaceTime!" -Does Cinderella know how to use a computer?
"Harry Poppins" -It takes quite an imagination to fuse Harry Potter and Mary Poppins into one.
Joyce: "I said a prayer all by myself." (What did you say?) "First mommy and daddy and then my sisters then my boys then my trip home then name of Jesus Christ amen."
-"my boys"?!
"with" pronounced "hith." -Joyce's last baby-talk expression.
Sage - 6
"Once you really look at it, it's almost impossible to look away."
-Sage, looking closely at a new flower outside the kitchen window.
"Can we play fairies while we work?"
-Sage to Mercy and Joyce while unpacking from the trip to Rotorua.
Sage: "I like scary things when I have someone to hug."
Mercy - 10
"Mercy needs a cuddle from Sage."
-Mercy's teacher to Sage's teacher during the week I was in the Philippines. Mercy and Sage got out of class for a minute to give each other a hug.
"If your daughter wants to go to Otago University, I'll give her a full-ride scholarship."
-Frank P. said in all seriousness to Mike after Mercy's concerto performance. He gives 300K away every year. I'll never forget Mercy smiling out at the audience during her performance!
"Does the president decide what's popular?"
-Mercy needs a refresher course in American politics after living out of the country for almost 2 years.
"I made it through the scary part of Fablehaven at school today."
-said with relief as Mercy walked in the door from school. Mercy finds the scary parts of books...well, scary.
As we walked up to an orchestra party full of strangers, I start to silently wish I had an excuse to stay home. Mercy, on the other hand, exclaims, "This looks FUN!!!"
"Going to school barefoot!"
-when asked about her favorite thing about living in New Zealand.
Oak - 13
"Awesome-as"
-said loudly by Thomas, a large Maori man with dreads, after Oak's talk in sacrament meeting one week
"If we were ants we would draw flowers differently."
-Oak trying to make sense of one of Sage's drawings of flowers.
Another mom watching Oak's basketball game with me, "Which one is your son?"
Holly: Oak, #10.
Mother: Oh, the little one - he's quite nifty!
-"little one"!? We will all have a good laugh over this one day!
"Scrub!"
-Danny and Noah's nickname for Oak. They both tower over him now, but it won't last long.
John (Tongan friend) to Oak and Noah: "You might want to start working out because in Tonga you get hot and then you take your shirt off."
-Since this is John talking, the Jones boys realize there's no way to avoid being white-and-nerdy in Tonga
Danny - 15
"Swagalicious! I feel like a BOSS in this." -Danny, on Christmas morning.
"I manned up."
-after I told Danny I felt a lot less pressure from him about gaming and asked what changed.
"What? Why are we staying in a motel?"
-Danny, at piano nationals, assuming we would camp.
Danny, in his sleep: "Cash...I got cash...." -

"I saw Danny riding his bike on my way home. He was riding with no hands and texting. The Man!"
-as reported by Noah
"It's not majestic enough."
-I hear Danny say under his breath as he restarts a passage in a Jon Schmidt piece.
Noah's friend: "Danny is so skux. Wherever he went, he had 10 girls following him around."
-
Danny doesn't let an all-boys school slow him down.
Danny: "Yours is metal! And has an insignia on it! What if it were the Francis Douglas insignia???" -Danny to Noah about the button on his school shorts. Noah had sewn on a nonstandard button.
Noah: "Our biking is awesome!"
Danny: "We mountain bike on the way to school...skidding and stuff."
-sometimes I hear the inner kids coming out of my 6'4"-tall young men.
Noah - 17
"Your shower doesn't get cold!" -This is Noah-complaining. He feels that cold water wakes him up.
"Cuz I'm tall and skinny...and not rich."
Noah's answer to Dad about why his shopping trip for new clothes had been a "pain."
"Wait...do they have $25 bills in the States?"
"This is what I had for lunch, and it was so good I had to take a picture."
-Noah explaining a picture of a tortilla wrap in the snow on expedition. Noah often takes pictures of food.
Noah: "I deserve a cookie after that." (11:31PM after the stress of buying tickets to USA)
Holly: "That's a fat-person way to think."
Noah: "That's an adventure-racer way to think!"
-adventure racers eat every 45 minutes (or so) during a race to keep up their energy.
"Because I want to be a prefect someday."
-said by a small Year 9 when Noah asked him why he [the yr 9] was peppering Noah with personal questions. Noah, Yr 13, is our Percy-the-prefect.
"I'm literally struggling to speak English." -Noah, after Germany trip.
Sports teacher at the girls' school in Germany that Noah attended for a week: "Are you sure your arms aren't tired?"
-Noah was enlisted to pass to each girl as part of a basketball final. He said it was one of the funniest things he'd ever done!
"Seriously. R. had his first kiss and hasn't even told his mom yet!"
-Noah has always been comfortable with Mike and me.
"Gale-force winds!"
-said cheerfully when I asked about the weather forecast, as Noah headed out the door for a 2-day around-the-mountain training.
Holly and Mike- 43
Mike: "Holly is not much of a shopper."
Mercy: "She's a grocery shopper!"

Oak, after my next serve went long: "That was not a poor serve. That was rich in failure."
Mike: "If we're going to putter, I say we putter with passion!"

This is a story about children and the Polish underground during WWII. The writing is sometimes unclear, but the history is exciting. Of course, I love the classical music tie-in about the significance of Chopin's Polonaise to the Polish people during the occupation.
